Coveted by Shawntelle Madison + Giveaway!

SOMETIMES WHAT YOU COVET IS IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP.

For werewolf Natalya Stravinsky, the supernatural is nothing extraordinary. What does seem strange is that she’s stuck in her hometown of South Toms River, New Jersey, the outcast of her pack, selling antiques to finicky magical creatures. Restless and recovering from her split with gorgeous ex-boyfriend, Thorn, Nat finds comfort in an unusual place: her obsessively collected stash of holiday trinkets. But complications pile up faster than her ornaments when Thorn returns home—and the two discover that the spark between them remains intense.

A Treat from Karen Marie Moning to Her Fans: Special Edition of INTO THE DREAMING with Exclusive Content

Karen Marie Moning‘s newly re-released Into the Dreaming (on sale April 24th) is a fan’s dream. The package includes the long out-of-print title novella that offers an glimpse into the early development of both the Fever world (the Unseelie King and Seelie Queen make appearances) and the Highlander world (MacKeltars, anyone?). That sexy story alone is worth the cover price, but beyond that, the book includes tons of extras: an unpublished novel proposal, deleted scenes from the Highlander books, and an exclusive preview of the art from the upcoming Fever graphic novel, Fever Moon. Karen herself wrote the introductions for each piece, and speaking as a fan, the book offers a rare inside-look into the writing process of this great author.

If you’ve ever put down a Moning novel and immediately thought, “I want MORE,” this is the answer to your craving. Here’s a sample for your reading pleasure:

Romance Author, Shawntelle Madison & her characters from COVETED + Giveaway!

Less than a month until Coveted comes out! Are you ready to meet Natalya Stravinsky yet and learn more about what  she’s hoarding in her house?

As April 24th approaches, I thought I’d help introduce you to Coveted and the zany characters in the story. Not only do we have our hero, Thorn Grantham, but I had to toss in Natalya’s family: her brother, mother, father, and her relatives. Add in Nat’s best friend Aggie (who has an obsession of her own), Bill, her goblin boss, and more. Into one big melting pot.

Why such a large cast? When reading a book or watching movies, I love a big cast—especially in a romantic comedy. Do you remember the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding? I love that movie! I feel the same way about Coveted–only it’s more of a My Big Fat Werewolf Family…with goblins, zombies, wizards, succubi, mermaids, and much more. It’s that family dynamic in My Big Fat Greek Wedding that makes the heroine’s (Toula’s) journey all the more fun and interesting.  As Toula tackles meeting a new guy and improving her life, the story unfolds with her family in tow. Take the scene where all of Toula’s family members get together so her beau, Ian, can meet Toula’s parents. We didn’t get a long and drawn out introduction to each member. Only a taste so you got to know the important ones. Just little snippets. Like Toula’s Aunt Voula asking Ian’s parents to drink more and more liquor to celebrate the occasion. Her aunt was so likeable and added flavor to the movie. Didn’t you feel like you want to be a member of Toula’s family? (Minus being a bridesmaid–cause those blue dresses were crazy!) But jokes aside, I loved how through the scenes you got to know each of the family members. Their quirks, their personalities. I loved how I could relate to having relatives like Toula’s and how Toula’s relatives made such an impact on her life. It made the movie all the more enjoyable in the end when she got the hero, the house, and a new baby in the end.

For Coveted, I wanted similar relationships in place. Nat’s fight against the Long Island pack is just a part of the whole story. She is also an outcast among her pack due to her OCD. She wants to be a normal werewolf—to have a place with not only her pack, but her family as well. It’s the development of these relationships through Nat’s journey, with a healthy dose of humor, that made Coveted a joy to write. Nat also develops new friendships through her supernatural therapy group which includes more zany characters: a mermaid who is afraid of the ocean, a Muse who is scared of her authors, and even more.

So, now that I’ve told you about why I love secondary characters in books, have you read a book recently with a large cast of characters? Which character did you connect with the most in that book/series? Maybe one of the characters from Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series? One of secondary characters from Monica McCarthy’s Highland Guard series? Perhaps you’re a fan girl like me of one of the characters in Patricia Brigg’s Mercy Thompson series? (I still heart you, Sam!) And then there’s Bram in the Alpha and Omega series. So awesome. I could go on and on!

If you’d like to connect with me, you can find me on Twitter as Shawntelle, on Facebook, as well as through my website. I also do blog posts on Wicked Authors (Mondays) and Magic & Mayhem Writers (Wednesdays). Check out an excerpt of Coveted coming out on April 24th!

Happy Reading,
Shawntelle

Romance is not on her mind when Chess Putnam is ordered by an infamous crime boss—who also happens to be her drug dealer—to use her powers as a witch to solve a grisly murder involving dark magic, she knows she must rise to the challenge. Adding to the intensity: Chess’s boyfriend, Terrible, doesn’t trust her, and Lex, the son of a rival crime lord, is trying to reignite the sparks between him and Chess.

Plus there’s the little matter of Chess’s real job as a ghost hunter for the Church of Real Truth, investigating reports of a haunting at a school in the heart of Downside. Someone seems to be taking a crash course in summoning the dead—and if Chess doesn’t watch her back, she may soon be joining their ranks.

As Chess is drawn into a shadowy world of twisted secrets and dark violence, it soon becomes clear that she’s not going to emerge from its depths without making the ultimate sacrifice.

If you’ve enjoyed Suzanne Brockmann’s Troubleshooters series, you know that her books deliver on both the romantic and suspenseful fronts. Now with her latest, Born to Darkness, Brockmann makes her first entry into the paranormal genre with quite a bang. We think this quote from Booklist says it best:

“Brockmann’s thrill ride of a series-launcher is complex, involving a highly addictive longevity drug (which stimulates the part of the brain that produces superpowers), human trafficking, torture, a mysterious institute, a kick-ass heroine, a bad-boy hero, hot sex, missing children, secret crushes, and so much more . . . . [This] winning tale, part romantic suspense and part science fiction, will leave readers for the next in the series.” —Booklist

The H. P. Mallory Starter Kit: How to Dive into the Jolie Wilkins Paranormal Romance Series

The H. P. Mallory Starter Kit: How to Dive into the Jolie Wilkins Paranormal Romance Series

H. P. Mallory, the author of Fire Burn and Couldron Bubble and the Dulcie O’Neil series, was a self-published, bestselling sensation in eBook before signing a book deal with Random House for the next three books in the Jolie Wilkins series. On sale today is Witchful Thinking, the latest in this sexy, funny series about a self-deprecating psychic named Jolie whose life is forever changed when handsome warlock Rand walks into her life and insists that she’s a witch. It turns out quickly enough that Jolie also has a unique ability to reanimate the dead, but really, it’s not until she’s crowned Queen of the Underworld that Jolie’s life gets really complicated, and that’s where this novel picks up the tale.

The books are cute, light reading, full of what we love the most about the paranormal genre (love triangle with a warlock and a handsome vampire? Check!). Somehow they also manage to be very sexy and funny at the same time, which makes them a favorite for us here at Romance@Random. When we first heard about Witchful Thinking, we were dying to know why these self-published books were so popular, so we imagine you too may be wondering how you can dive into this series. We have a few options right here for you:

1. Start right with Witchful Thinking! Since the other titles are only available in eBook, the book has has quite a bit of backstory to catch everyone up to speed. This may also be good for those who have read them but need help remembering all the events thus far. (H. P. promises this is going to be the only book with all the backstory for new readers, so seasoned veterans can rest assured that the plot will move right along in the next two Jolie books coming later this year).

2. Meet Jolie Wilkins via her adorable YouTube videos, dishing advice to new witches everywhere! Our favorite is Lesson #3: Men of the Underworld, but you should also check out Lesson #1: Witch Problems and Lesson #2: Bonding.

3. Whether you’ve read these before or not, it’s worth diving into Be Witched, the $0.99 eBook short story from Rand’s perspective. For us fanatics, it’s more Rand, which is never a bad thing. Yum. For you newbies, it’ll give a nice taste of what Mallory’s world is all about.

4. Want to start right from the beginning? Book 1 of the series is available on the Kindle (where it has nearly 300 reviews and an average 4.5 star rating—crazy!), Nook, and Smashwords.
