Guest Post: Donna Grant gives the 411 on her immortal Highlanders + Giveaway!
Thank you to Sue for hosting me today in celebration of my newest book – MIDNIGHT’S KISS.
For those unfamiliar with my Dark Warriors series, let me tell you a bit about it.
The Warriors are a group of Highlanders who are the greatest warriors of their family. By being so, they carry within their blood primeval gods that once unbound, not only make them immortal, but give the Highlanders enhanced abilities and special powers. They also transform by way of claws and fangs, but also each god has a color, so the Highlanders turn the color of their god when that god is released. IOW, when those Warriors are ready for battle.
There are so many legends and myths of Scotland that it’s hard to know what was real and what wasn’t. So, when I began the series, I developed a legend of my own: What if Rome was driven out of Britain by magic?
And by magic I mean Druids. Two sects actually (good and bad). It’s the evil Druids who call up the primeval gods from Hell, but it takes both sects to bind the gods inside the men. Until my first villain, centuries later, sets the gods free once more in her bid to take over the world.
Deirdre is the perfect villain in my Dark Sword series, but when the series time traveled to modern day Scotland, I knew I had to add another twist. Welcome Declan Wallace, a new kind of villain that takes my Warriors by surprise. Declan, however, wasn’t enough. There’s a new villain in town, and he is going to come at the Warriors and Druids sideways.
Wait, your saying. Time travel? Yep. The series began in 2009 with DANGEROUS HIGHLANDER, a historical paranormal set in medieval Scotland. After six book in the DS series, my guys decided to throw me a twist and time travel. My love was historicals. I’d dipped my toes in contemporaries with a novella and one time travel, but not an entire book, and certainly not for the remaining books in the series.
My publisher asked me to keep the Warriors in modern time, so there would be no going back for me. Yet, when I sat down to write MIDNIGHT’S MASTER (the first Dark Warrior book), I found the idea of taking these alpha, immortal Highlanders into contemporary Scotland a thrill.
All is not fun and games, however, because the storyline that began in the Dark Sword series continues in the Dark Warriors. There are still villains to fight, evil to battle, and love to find.
It’s been a lot of fun taking each Warrior’s power and using it for – or against – him. To add to the conflict, their heroines are Druids who each hold a special type of magic. With the Warriors being such strong, rugged men, their heroines have to be just as stalwart to be able to stand beside them.
I love talking about my Highlanders, and I’m pleased to announce that MIDNIGHT’S KISS features Arran. He first showed up in WICKED HIGHLANDER, and he’s always been around, but kinda quiet and not revealing much about himself to me. Not so anymore.
Arran was a surprise to me, as was his heroine who is an archeologist. The only thing I knew about archeology is what I learned from watching Indian Jones. Needless to say, when I couldn’t get the heroine to change her profession, I had a lot of research to do.
Here’s a little snippet from MIDNIGHT’S KISS…
Ronnie tried not to look at his ass, she really did. But she’d never seen a man fill out a pair of jeans the way Arran MacCarrick did.
And it wasn’t just his jeans. From his wide shoulders and muscular chest to the way that torso narrowed to jeans resting low on slim hips and encasing long legs. Ronnie would bet that beneath that black tee were abs so defined she’d be able to count each of them.
In one word, he was yummy.
He was the embodiment of tall, dark, and handsome. It was his smile, the one that said he knew secrets of the flesh she could only imagine were out there. A smile that beckoned her to throw caution to the wind and let her body lead.
But she’d already made that mistake once. One tall, dark, and handsome man was enough for a lifetime. It didn’t matter that Arran exuded a sexual magnetism she found herself inexplicably drawn to. He had charisma and confidence in spades.
Add that to a tight, muscular body a blind woman could drool over, and Ronnie knew she was in trouble with a capital T. Arran flashed that smile and stared at her as if he could look deep into her soul and uncover her wildest dreams and desires.
For a moment, she almost let him.
For a moment, she could see herself with him. Naked. Limbs entwined, breaths harsh and uneven, skin slick with sweat, and desire ruling her, leading her.
Ronnie pulled in a ragged breath, but she couldn’t dislodge the image now that it had been seen. And felt. Her body throbbed, as if it yearned to be touched. By Arran.
Her heart thudded in her chest as she fought against the pull of his body. It would be so easy to give in and let her passion and his virility dictate everything.
The newest member of her team was friendly enough, but she didn’t miss the way his gaze moved around the site as if trying to study everything without being seen.
It wasn’t just his rugged good looks that set her off kilter. It was the gleam in his golden eyes, the way he stood, as if he was ready for battle.
Which was silly, because there was nothing to fight.
Ronnie chuckled to herself.
“What is it?” Arran asked when he straightened.
She shook her head and grinned. “Every time I come to Scotland I find myself thinking I’ll see men with swords strapped to them, ready for battle.”
He didn’t laugh as she expected. Instead, he gazed at her with his amazing golden eyes, an intensity about him that made it difficult for her to draw breath.
Dark brows slashed over eyes amid a high forehead. A wealth of hair so dark brown that it almost appeared black was kept long with a hint of a wave and hung past his shoulders. He had impossibly long, thick eyelashes, and the dark stubble on his chiseled cheeks and square jaw only added to his attraction.
Then there were his wide lips that were fuller than a man’s ought to be. They made her think of tangled limbs, of long, sensual kisses where she’d forget everything but the man touching her.
As a total package, Arran was the kind of man who drew heads wherever he went. Women wanted him, and men wanted to be him.
