Guest Post: Romance + Crime by Laura Griffin & Allison Brennan + Giveaway!
Crime-solving romantic pairs are nothing new. MOONLIGHTING, of course, is fondly remembered. And does anyone remember HART TO HART? SCARECROW & MRS. KING? Classic shows that took a good trope – two people in love or falling in love while they solve crimes and save the world. The foundation of romantic suspense.
What fan of romantic suspense didn’t start by watching classic television crime drama? And true romance fans always prefer television with at least a love interest. So when we get both – suspense AND romance – we leap for joy.
When CASTLE began, a lot of people feared that as soon as Rick and Kate got together, the show would take a turn for the worse. On the contrary, it’s only gotten better. Once they connected at the beginning of Season Five, the strong series took a step in the right direction and gave us everything we look for in a romantic suspense: a smart, dashing hero; a smart and independent heroine; a compelling romance full of both conflict and love; and a strong mystery plot that is as much part of the story as the relationship between the characters. Better, CASTLE has done a terrific job of giving us an appealing secondary cast while keeping the focus on Castle and Beckett. Season Six? Can’t wait!
Then there’s BONES. Another fantastic crime show with strong sexual tension and terrific storylines. But … was anyone else disappointed with Season Six? When they brought in the reporter chick for Booth and Brennan reverted back to awkwardness? Her character growth seemed to regress, and Booth was all … weird. And while we understand the need for them to quickly get together (Emily Deschanel’s real life pregnancy), the process was rushed and out of character. It should have done Season Five. It’s like the writers feared if Booth and Brennan got together, the show would fall apart … but what they should have been more concerned about HOW they did it, not WHEN. Because it just didn’t work, and Booth became less … Booth in Season Seven. However, Season Eight was better, so Season Nine is on the horizon.
What about you? Do you watch CASTLE or BONES? Do you have another favorite romantic duo in television today? What about the oldies?
