Guest Post: Summer Love by Elisabeth Barrett
Ah, summer love.
Is there anything sweeter? There’s something about long, sun-drenched days and romantic star-filled nights that is conducive to romance. The weather helps, of course. You’re more likely to be out and about—strolling on the boardwalk, dining al fresco, or playing a sport—during this season. Plus, in summer, everyone looks like they’re in love with flushed, dewy skin and clothing that leaves little to the imagination.
A summertime mentality helps, too—the thought that the time is right for something promising to happen. If you’re still in school, the pressure’s off—at least for a while—and you can focus on your personal life for a couple of months. If you’re working, things usually ease up a bit. Even if things stay busy at work, it is hard not to at least think about relaxing a tad more. You find time to take that vacation you’ve been putting off. Maybe you connect with someone.
And maybe, just maybe, you fall in love.
In my latest Star Harbor novel, Slow Summer Burn, which comes out on August 12, the action begins at the start of summer. Val Grayson is a DEA agent who lives on a houseboat on Cape Cod. Cameron Stahl is a socialite with her own Boston brownstone. Val spends his free time working on his boat and helping out his brothers. Cam spends her free time chairing charity events and getting manicures. On first blush, these two seem like they have nothing in common, but once they reunite in Star Harbor, the magic happens. A sudden storm, a shared umbrella, and that spark that Val and Cam have been trying to ignore ignites into flames. And as it turns out, they have a lot in common . . . more than they, or anyone else, anticipated.
Summer is the perfect time for each of them to discover what they really want. Val seeks to focus on his own happiness without having to protect his brothers. Cam needs to follow her heart without worrying about what her parents think. It takes the charms of summer in Star Harbor to make these two realize that they’re perfect for each other, no matter what obstacles they have to overcome. As summer nears an end, Val and Cam need to see if they have what it takes to make their relationship endure.
Of course they do.
