Guest Post: Where Do Your Stories Come From? by Anita Clenney + Giveaway
If you’re a writer I’m sure you’ve been asked “How do you come up with your ideas?” I’m asked this every time I talk about writing with someone who doesn’t write. They’re amazed that all these plots are swirling around in a writer’s brain.
I can’t imagine not having a plot in my head. Even before I knew I wanted to write—like decades before I knew I wanted to write—I still had plots in my head. As a kid, I thought in scenes. Whatever was going on around me was a springboard for a daydreaming session. Too bad I didn’t connect the dots earlier and realize I needed to tell stories.
Writers are creative people, but how each comes up with a plot can differ greatly. My most creative time is when I’m falling asleep or waking up. I can’t tell you how often I’ve lain in bed plotting. The ideas just seem to flow. I think part of the reason is that I dream so vividly. My dreams are amazing, so I think as I’m waking the creative part of my brain is still rolling. So I soak it all up, and then grab my iPhone and start making notes.
We’re inspired by different things. Dreams, movies, books, people, stories in the news. One of my biggest inspirations is scenery. Night scenes, with the moon shining through the trees, or a sunny day with trees dancing in the breeze. I love trees, if you haven’t noticed, and yes, they do inspire me, in life and as a writer. They’re beautiful. Bare, full of leaves, dead, I love them all. Maybe because that tree has seen so much. If only it could tell its story. It’s interesting that as much as I love scenery, it’s the one thing in my stories that I tend to neglect. I have to go back and layer in the scenery at the end.
What inspires you? If you’re an author, how do you come up with your plots? Do you have a time when you’re most creative? If you’re a reader, do you have a favorite reading time? I’ll give away one autographed copy of FOUNTAIN OF SECRETS to a commenter. USA and Canada only.

FOUNTAIN OF SECRETS. A relics expert with a nose for mystery is torn between her sexy billionaire boss and her hot bodyguard. Each would die to save her…and win her heart.
Kendall Morgan puts her sixth sense back to work in the second book of the Relic Seekers series, divining the history and location of ancient relics. Her boss, the gorgeous billionaire Nathan Larraby, sends her to Italy to safeguard a priceless treasure belonging to the Protettori, an ancient order of monks who guard four powerful relics that Nathan believes may be the cure for his dark curse. He also sends brooding mercenary Jake Stone to watch Kendall’s back—although her back isn’t all Jake has his eye on.
Nathan joins them, and all three tumble into a labyrinth of defenses created by the monks to protect their treasures, including the Fountain of Youth. They find themselves in England on the trail of the legendary King Arthur, who along with the Reaper, seems mysteriously connected to the Protettori. Sparks fly and bonds are tested as Kendall and Nathan’s pasts are revealed and Jake’s becomes even more of a mystery. The trio must stay one step ahead of the Reaper if they want to survive.
Fountain of Secrets twists and turns through the shadows of myth and reality as Kendall races to uncover the Protettori’s secrets and fight her growing attraction to her boss and her bodyguard.
