“Ooh, we should do Summer Nights,” Reagan says, tapping the pen against the karaoke sheet. She’s doing that thing with her teeth—when she clacks and clacks while cocking her head back and forth. I loved it when she did that. No, not past tense. I still love it. It’s adorable as hell. Yeah…
“Or The Time of my Life,” she says between her clacking. “I like when you do your Patrick Swayze hip thing.”
She laughs, and I think I laugh with her, but it’s not coming out right. I know it was my brilliant idea to do karaoke for our first date. It’s our thing…we sing together. But I look around at the crowd and my chest gets a funky thwap! when I don’t see Mickey out there rolling her eyes at me.
“Uh… I don’t know. Not really feeling that one,” I say, flipping to the next page of options. The Girl is Mine sticks out at me again, like it has for the past year, but why in the hell is it still pulsing at me like Talon has my girl? My girl is standing right next to me.
I practically tear the folder in half as I turn away from that page. My hands are shaking, and I pull back before I ruin something—besides this date, which I can already feel going down the shitter.
“Are you okay?” Reagan’s eyes widen in that childlike, yet sexy way they always do, and I try to find the reaction I always get to her, but a nagging voice keeps crawling through my brain. I want to tell myself it’s because she’s my best friend’s ex, but it’s not that at all.
“Do you think they’re at Stoner Boner?” It falls from my mouth before I have time to think about it. Reagan raises an eyebrow, along with one side of her mouth.
“Kayla and Talon?”
I nod, then look at the karaoke options just for something to do with my eyes.
“I don’t know. Kayla didn’t tell me where they were going.” She crosses her arms and leans against the open folder with me. Her elbow touches mine, and instead of causing a raucous of horny as hell hormones like it usually does, it makes me feel guilty and I slide away.
“Maybe we should go up there,” I joke, but not really. “Scare the shit out of them.”
Reagan laughs, and it pisses me off. I know I was trying to tease and be light and goofy and shit, but I’m not in the mood. And I can’t help but feel like if she knew me like Kayla did, she’d pick up on it, call me out, and then make it better.
“I don’t think that’s the best idea.” She slides toward me, closing the gap I put between us. “If Talon did take her to make-out central, that’s probably what they’re doing.”
Ah shit. Now I’m ready to drag her into my van and speed all the way to that hill, just to stop that image from burning into my skull. Mickey would kill me, but at this point, I don’t think I care.
I can feel Reagan watching me, and I want to punch myself dead in the face for being such a dick.
Running a hand over my eyes, I hope to wipe out whatever the hell is wrong with me tonight and just be with her. The girl I loved.
Damn it… love.
Not. Past. Tense!
“Yeah, you’re probably right,” I say with a smile.
It feels weird on my face right now, but I’m giving it my best shot.
She bites her bottom lip and takes another step closer. “Hmm… Maybe we should head up there.”
She laughs and gets even closer. I back up against the wall. My heart feels like it might short out, but not in a good way. All I see is Kayla jumping on me in my apartment. How when she did that, my mind wasn’t thinking about Reagan at all. Now Reagan’s here, and it looks like she’s about to do the same thing, and instead of inviting it in, wanting it, I want to bolt.
“Come on, Wes, you know what I mean.”
She always calls me Wes. I don’t think Kayla’s called me Wes once. It’s always Wesley—and I like it. Damn, I have to realize that now?
“Uh…you want to go to Stoner Boner?”
Another laugh tumbles from her lips, which are closer than I think they’ve ever been. She’s wearing a lot of lipgloss. Kayla wears lipstick or chapstick, but it doesn’t seem like it’d get all over my face if we were to kiss.
Ugh… what is wrong with my brain?
“You know, I think only you and Kayla call it that.”
“Call what, what?”
She puts her fingers up in air quotes. “Stoner Boner.”
My brow pulls in. “Really?”
She nods, drops her hands, and licks her lips. “You never noticed that?”
No, I didn’t. I’m starting to notice a lot of things I hadn’t before.
I stare at her, but I’m not really looking at her.
Or maybe I am for the first time. And there’s nothing. She’s just not…she’s not… I don’t even know anymore.
I shake my head, trying to kickstart it into working mode again. “Sorry, what?”
“You want to go to the hill?”
I should want to. I even asked Kayla how to deal with this when I got here. I should want to. But… I don’t.
“I’m actually, uh, not feeling that well,” I lie like a lameass, and even add a fake sniff. Reagan giggles, not buying it at all, and I should’ve known she’d react that way, but what I don’t expect is her lunging on me exactly like Kayla did.
Only Kayla stopped moving forward. She didn’t dive in for a kiss, and I see Reagan going right for it. My shorted out heart picks back up and runs through my body as I try to figure out how the hell to get out of this, even though I don’t know why I suddenly want the hell out.
She gets centimeters away, and I panic, doing the only thing that comes to mind.
Ever since high school, Kayla has been crazy for gorgeous football player Talon. But before she could muster the courage to tell him, he became a hot item with her beautiful BFF, Reagan. The only person who knows Kayla’s secret is Wesley, Talon’s best bud—and he’s got it bad for Reagan. Now they’re all in college together, hanging out 24/7. For Kayla, seeing the two lovebirds together is absolutely unbearable. So Kayla and Wesley hatch a plot to drive them apart before Talon has a chance to give Reagan the Christmas gift she’s been waiting for.
Soon enough, the once happy couple is fighting. Reagan suddenly can’t get enough of Wesley’s goofy sense of humor, and Talon seems to be paying more attention to Kayla than a guy who’s “only a friend” ever should. But just when everything seems to be falling into place, Kayla and Wesley accidentally spend a night together and discover a hitch in their plan they never considered: that switching partners may not lead to a perfect ending after all.
