Monica’s Musings: The Cliffhanger Ending . . . Thoughts?
I never really encountered them in all the many books I’d read (and trust me, I’ve read plenty). I guess they just weren’t that popular, especially in romance fiction, my typical reading genre of choice. But when I stumbled upon all of these amazing New Adult books last year and started reading them one after another, I saw a pattern emerge.
Many of them ended with a cliffhanger.
Not that a cliffhanger is an absolute staple, but they certainly do appear quite frequently in New Adult titles. And I believe most readers have a love/hate relationship with them.
I know I do.
The first major one I encountered was while reading Abbi Glines’ Fallen Too Far. I start reading and the story sucks me right in. Soon, I’m devouring it. It’s so good I can’t stop reading. Further and further I get, and I start thinking it’s gotta be coming to the end soon right?
Then I glance at my eReader and see I’ve completed 98% of the book. Wait a minute. There’s still so much left unresolved. What’s going to happen next? But Rush just did this and Blaire just did that and argh….
I’ll confess: I was frustrated. I looked around blankly, ready to complain to my family but I realized they all abandoned me. It was past midnight and the living room was empty. They’d all gone to bed. I had no one to cry to ‘what’s going to happen next?’
Not that they would care but that’s another story for another time (and thank goodness for my writer friends who like talking about this sort of thing with me!).
But guess what? That cliffhanger ending left me dying to know what happens. I had to know. So when Abbi announced the next book in the series was live on Amazon, I clicked right on over and bought it. One clickers unite! (It’s a sickness.)
Here’s where I make another confession: ONE WEEK GIRLFRIEND ended on a cliffhanger. I tried to wrap it up somewhat and give the reader hope but still. Total cliffhanger. And trust me, I heard from readers. Oh, did I hear from you!
Many of you emailed me saying you almost threw your Kindle/Nook/iPad/etc. I was shocked at the passionate response. Many of you also wrote, begging me not to string their story out too long. They didn’t want Drew + Fable to suffer. They believed those two deserved their happily ever after. And I believed they did too.
So I gave it to them in SECOND CHANCE BOYFRIEND. Oh, I put them through the ringer and made them suffer a little bit but in the end, I couldn’t deny them their happily ever after. I wrapped the story up nice and neat and with a pretty little bow tied on top.
Here’s the deal though. Drew + Fable refuse to stop talking to me. They’re rather chatty. They wanted more page time and I finally caved in. They’re getting their own novella in early 2014 and there isn’t a cliffhanger in sight!
But back to the cliffhanger. Tell me what you think of them. Love them? Hate them? Love/hate them? Can’t live without them? I’d love to hear your opinion.
