Mistletoe Blog – By Katie Rose
Penelope Appleton was the most beautiful of the Appleton sisters, and she possessed a secret. While Winifred and Jennifer had posed as spiritualists, pretending to contact the dead and read fortunes, Penelope truly could see the future.
She’d known that clever Jennifer had found the man of her dreams when she met Gabriel Forester, in spite of a rough beginning when he disapproved of his mother visiting the sisters for guidance. And even though Charles Howe initially thought to persuade Winifred into his arms and out of her ambition to practice the law, Penelope foresaw that one day they would wed.
So when she has another vision, seeing herself falling madly in love with the man of her dreams at the Vanderbilt’s Christmas ball, Penelope is excited. And it all happens just as she’s foreseen:
It was him. Although she’d met Jared in the past, it was as if she was seeing him for the first time. Her heart beat so loudly she wondered if others could hear it, and she had to force herself to take another breath as the heady emotion flooded through her.
Jared Marton was the dark haired stranger in her dreams! Penelope knew it instantly. Why had she never noticed how handsome he was, that his eyes were a compelling deep green, his chin firm and square, his mouth a sensual promise? He really was a magnificent specimen of a man, she mused, even though he was known as a rogue and one of New York’s most eligible bachelors. Wealthy to boot, he was popular with the ladies, though he seemed to have no intention of settling down with just one. He enjoyed women, had a zest for life, and was used to having his own way.
This man was her destiny.
But her pleasure quickly turns to fear when Penelope also foresees that Jared is destined to die . . .
This was a wonderful story to write, and in spite of Penelope’s vision, a lot of fun. Jared continually pursues her, while Penelope wants nothing more than to distance herself from him. The Victorian Christmas setting was amazingly romantic. I remember getting my first ‘going steady’ ring as a Christmas gift, and the season still holds that promise of love and wonder, with or without the snow.
What is your fondest Christmas memory?
