Part Two – Getting the Phone call, gathering my posse, travel, etc. by Valerie Bowman + Giveaway
This week I’m celebrating the release of the third historical romance novel in my Secret Brides trilogy with the tale of how I ended up on the reality TV show, Say Yes to the Dress, Atlanta. Yesterday, I was at Beyond Her Book talking about how I applied and was selected for the show. Today’s post is all about how I had to talk a few people into coming with me to Atlanta!
One lucky commenter will win a copy print (U.S.-only) or e (all other territories, void where prohibited) of my new book, Secrets of a Scandalous Marriage.
So, after I got the call that I was accepted to be filmed for the show, they producers sent me a long list of things I needed to know. For example, did you know that you shouldn’t wear houndstooth patterns on television? And you should wear a belt so they have something to clip your mic to? I didn’t! They also warn you to eat well before you begin taping at 8am because the session lasts until at least 2pm and there are NO SNACKS. I’m telling you, the list was long and exhaustive and after I got done reading it, I still had several important things to do.
I had to get the time off work (last minute, I might add), convince a few people to go with me, decide what I was going to wear, and figure out travel to Atlanta.
First up, convincing my boss that taking a day off work was worthwhile. Thank goodness I have a very understanding boss. And double thank goodness that I was able to schedule the taping on a Friday. As an author, I use a lot of my vacation days traveling around to conferences and signings and don’t have many to spare, so being able to go on a Friday and not have to be back the next day was really important. Thankfully, my boss let me take the day off even though I’m pretty sure she thought I was a bit crazy to want to be on TV.
Next, I began furiously watching episodes of the show to see what I should expect. Then, I had to convince my friend, Tonya, and my sister, Melanie, to come with me. Tonya, who was pregnant at the time, readily agreed, the trouper. Melanie took a bit more persuading! I rounded out my posse with my friend, Candice, my cousin, Kate, and my future mother-in-law, Sheryl, who just happens to live in Atlanta. Convenient, no?
Next up, what do you wear to be on TV? Armed with the big list of what not to do, I narrowed it down to a purple dress or some dark trousers and an empire-waisted shirt. Of course I ended up trying on these clothes in the hotel room in front of my sister and cousin and they picked for me. Next, my cousin ensured we would be fabulous-looking by hiring a make-up artist to meet us at the hotel room at an ungodly hour and do our makeup . We did our hair ourselves. No! They don’t pay for or provide any of that on the set.
Finally, I drove up to Atlanta with Candice and Tonya on Thursday night after work, ready for taping bright and early the next morning!
For more on my journey through reality TV land, join me tomorrow at Heroes and Heartbreakers where I’ll give a detailed accounting of the taping. You’ll never guess what they took away from my friend, Candice!
