Romance Readers Rule the World – Maggie gives us a readers insight + Happy 4th of July!
Maggie Mae volunteered at RomCon in Denver, Colorado, June 24th – 30th & we’re delighted to have her here to share her experience with you. RomCon is an annual event that celebrates the romance reader. RomCon promotes that this is an event “Where Readers Rule” and they certainly exceeded expectations.
The convention was kicked off with a warm welcome by author Teresa Medeiros on Friday morning. Readers then “boarded” the USS Titanic, where Deanne Gist enthralled the audience with a fabulous array of authentic menu items and tea demonstration. Reader Rebecca described the Titanic Tea Party as, “absolutely amazing. It was the best event I have ever attended at a convention. We laughed, we cried, and the authentic Titanic menu was fabulous. ”
RomCon also hosted its very first Legendary Hero Contest. Romance cover models spent the weekend with readers showing why they are legendary. The five gentlemen competing were warm and gracious to all the readers. It was so exciting getting to know them. I had the delicious opportunity to speak with cover model Len Gunn, who placed second in the RomCon Legendary Hero Contest. He said, “Not every hero chooses to be a gentleman, but every gentleman can choose to be a hero! RomCon was a terrific experience. The authors, attendees, and participants were all great to be around.”
Readers had the opportunity to have a Speed Date with their favorite author, attempt to become the Ultimate Slayer in the Slayers Inc. Game, be a high roller at the Monte Carlo Casino Night and attend intimate chats with some of their favorite authors. There was something for everyone, with over seventy events offered. My personal favorite was the Chocolate Mangasm, where readers played bachelorette style games and competed for naughty prizes. All the authors in attendance joined in the fun and frivolity, competing right next to readers. It was a late night treat for those who have a bit of a wild side.
Many readers said that their favorite events were the intimate chats. I attended a chat with Delilah Marvelle and had the opportunity to ask one of my favorite historical romance authors questions in a small group setting. Teresa Medeiros stated, “I think RomCon is incredibly unique because we get to talk to our readers one-on-one. The intimacy of it is something you don’t find at any other con. It’s definitely something I want to do again.”
RomCon is a reader experience unlike any other. It is three fun filled days where authors can promote their books and build relationships with readers in a personal and memorable way. I already have my calendar marked for RomCon 2013!
