Guest Post – Unleashing Your Inner Tiger, by Crystal Jordan + Giveaway!
For whatever reason we don’t seem to introduce enough paranormal romance on R@R – I’m planning on changing that especially with ICED by KMM coming out October 30th — sound like a plan? Enjoy Crystals post -
I write a lot of shapeshifters–werewolves, lions, tiger, bears, hyenas, sharks–you name an animal and I’ve probably tried it. I even had a swan-shifter once. That’s right, a swam. She was chain-smoker in her human form, because she couldn’t handle being too cute.
There are a lot of reasons that shifters exist in my various books and series. Sometimes it’s magic, a curse, science experiment (or science accident–oopsie!), aliens, and sometimes a combination of one or more of those. The explanations can be pretty out there and that’s what makes it interesting for me. I get to make stuff up. How cool is that? And my mother used to wash my mouth out with soap for telling stories. Ha! Little did she know. Read more

Review from HEA USA Today: The Shadow Keepers!
The Shadow Keepers series is a hot, alluring fantasy ride through all types of paranormal species and love interests, spiced with a bit violence (sometimes a whole dash!). This makes J.K. Beck’s series a great world for readers to fall into.
JK Beck writes of a world with justice for the paranormal society that sometimes spills into our own mundane human world. She writes of a world with lawyers, vampires, weres, strangers, killers and criminals, also of attraction and lust … a lot of lust. This review is a brief view of her Shadow Keepers books and the couples who dance through their pages. Read more
Do you love ghost stories? Karen Robards’s inspiration for her new novel will give you chills.
I love ghost stories. Always have, always will. Wuthering Heights, with ghost Cathy haunting Heathcliff, is one of my very favorite books ever. The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe made my heart pound the first time I read it, when I was about twelve years old, and it makes my heart pound when I read it still. Since I started writing THE LAST VICTIM, which has its own (way sexy) resident ghost, I’ve done a lot of research into the paranormal. But sometimes the best ghost stories begin at home.

Fangirls of Poe’s THE RAVEN: Nancy Holder & Leanna Renee Hieber!
Award winning, bestselling paranormal authors Leanna Renee Hieber and Nancy Holder, both avid Edgar Allan Poe fangirls, share their take on the film The Raven.
Leanna Renee Hieber’s take: “I loved every minute of the film. No, it wasn’t historically accurate. Positing Poe as a detective in the last harried, mysterious days of his life is utterly fiction. Truthfully he was probably far less cogent and well off the deep-end. No one can say his death was not a tragedy. I’d have loved whatever else his broken heart and sad soul could have offered us but like many gifted persons, his candle simply lost flame. I loved the film’s visual landscape; Gothic and stunning. Cusack looked delicious. Bring on men in frock coats and billowing black great-coats! I enjoyed an active, vibrant Poe. I appreciated that the film dealt with his struggles, vices and those who misunderstood him and the few who validated him. His written lines and creepy tales gained a new voice and affirmed his words will never lose their power. I didn’t find the film predictable, I was engrossed and entertained. Did I mention Cusack looked delicious? Read more

Gems from myTo- Be-Read Pile
By Stacey Agdern, blogger, bookseller, reader extraordinaire
Five books. Two anthologies. Two paranormal romances. One contemporary. One Amish romance. One historical. What do they have in common? Nothing really, except that they’re all gems from my ‘to-be- read’ pile.
We’re in the midst of a season that in it’s own way, places great importance on finding the hidden. From the importance of the Passover Afikoman, to the fun of Easter eggs and the beauty of the first crocuses, Spring is all about taking joy in what we find.
So too with a ‘to-be- read ‘pile. The great desire for spring cleaning coincides with the realization that your ‘to-be-read’ pile is, in reality, too big. And so you begin your search for the hidden., the gems without which your book buying cannot resume.
One of the first gems I came across was a historical by debut author Theresa Romain. ‘Season for Temptation’ was amazing, reminding me of all the reasons I love historical romance. I can promise that the second book in this series will not wait in the to be read pile.
There are certain series I prefer having multiple books in before beginning the first. Only authors whose books I know and love fall into this category, because there is nothing worse than discovering you own multiple books in a series you don’t like. Laura Anne Gilman hooked me as a reader with her magically flavored ‘Retrievers’ urban-fantasy-romance series. Her clear transition to first person prose and beautiful world building (enhancing a city we both live in) makes me an extremely happy devotee of her brand new PUPI series. The first book, ‘Hard Magic,’ is a fast paced urban fantasy with a narrator who is coming into her own in a world with ever-changing rules. And with two more installments on the tbr, I couldn’t be happier.
‘Wild and Steamy’ is a rather fabulous example of what happens when authors get together on their own and put together an anthology. Two novellas that continue series I adore– Meljean Brook’s Iron Seas and Carolyn Crane’s Disillusionists trilogy (of which I have a book in the tbr) and one novella that shows the steamier side of Jill Myles, an author I’ve read and loved before.
‘Seal of my Dreams’ is another example of what happens when authors get together, only this Anthology was for a wonderful cause. It features stories from authors I’ve read recently (Roxanne StClaire, Cindy Gerard, HelenKay Dimon, Stephanie Tyler), authors I’ve adored in the past, and am waiting with bated breath for a new story from(Tara Janzen, Gennita Low) and new authors I will certainly read more of (thankfully I have at least one Stephanie Bond title in the handy tbr).
I am notorious for my adoration of Amish romances. However, for obvious reasons, I’m very picky about my story-lines, which makes me just as picky about the authors I read. Thankfully Rosalind Lauer’s ‘A Simple Winter’ hit my sweet spot. Wonderful world building and lovely characters that let me enjoy the story for it’s own sake. I will definitely be reading more of this author’s books.
Have you dipped into your own tbr pile recently and found some really good books? Or do you even have a ‘to be read’ pile? Let me know, happy reading ,and I’ll see you next month!
Giveaway every week on R@R – 5 randomly chosen commenters could win — winners announced on Sunday – good luck!
Romance Author, Shelly Laurenston talks about ‘BEAR MEETS GIRL’ + Giveaway!
Here’s what readers are saying about Shelly’s newest romantic release, the latest in her Pride Series:
‘If you like Paranormal Shifter Romance books with some unexpected humor you’ll really love Bear Meets Girl.’
‘If you love the humor and storytelling from past books, you’ll get more.’
‘If you’re a fan, get the book, you get to live in this great world for a time.’
Setting: New York, NY
Hero: Lou “Crush” Crushek
Heroine: Marcella “Bare Knuckles” Malone
One sentence summary: A bear meets a girl…hijinks ensue. Heh.
Scene you like most and would never cut: When Crush meets his favorite hockey players of all time. Writing his reaction to meeting his heroes was such a blast!
Thing your heroine would never be caught dead doing/saying: Real ladies never engage in fisticuffs!
Tell us one quirky thing about your hero? Crush has a dog living with him that he insists is not his dog. Whose dog it is, of course, is not the point. It’s just not his dog.
Tell us one quirky thing about your heroine: Well, as far as the hero’s concerned, Cella Malone is nothing but one big quirk. So narrowing that down to one specific quirk is a surprisingly major challenge.
What you think readers will like best about this book: Watching a hero who hates change deal with change…and Cella.
What’s next: I’m currently working on Pride #8, but I’m still in the sitting and staring stage of my process. Sometimes I do research, but mostly it’s sitting and staring. Sometimes watching old episodes of “Law & Order.”
Question for discussion:
I just recently re-watched my favorite movie of all time “The Godfather,” and with “The Hunger Games” having just released, I wonder what you guys feel are the best adaptations of great (or just good) books? Romance or otherwise. For me, it’s still the Godfather. It took all the best stuff from the novel and created a brilliant film, IMO.
Shelly tells all — well, a few things:
1. What’s your favorite movie of all time? Heh. “The Godfather.”
2. What’s your favorite kind of story to get lost in? Murder mysteries, legal procedurals. I have no desire to write them (and I don’t think I’d write them very well) but I enjoy watching them and reading them.
3. What’s the first book you remember reading? Something with a duck. I think its mother died. I remember it was sad.
4. What’s your favorite fairy tale? Rumpelstiltskin. I just don’t know why.
5. What’s your favorite cartoon character? Bugs Bunny. That bunny was just too cool.
6. What’s something you’d like to tell your readers? No. I’m not as crazy as the heroines I write. If I was, when would I have the time to do anything but raise bail money?
7. What would your occupation be if you were no longer a writer? I’d probably try to get back into marketing. The editorial side.
8. What do you do to unwind and relax? I started playing computer games again. I’m impatiently waiting for Diablo 3. I already have my preorder in.
9. Tea or Coffee? And how do you take it? Hate both. I either drink water, Coke with a lot of ice (but only when I’m eating out) or, if I need to be warmed up, hot chocolate with lots of chocolate.
10. What does love mean to you? Being comfortable in your own skin. You should always feel that way with the person you’re planning to spend your life with.
11. Which era would you least like to have lived in, fashion-wise and why? Most? Least is the 1800s. All those bustles and things. Most is usually Medieval England but I’ve become a big fan of the Ancient Roman era. But that could also be that I’ve been really loving the dresses the actresses have been wearing on “Spartacus: Vengeance.”
12. What name have you been dying to use as a lead character, but haven’t found the right fit yet? Jebediah. I like those old Biblical names.
13. Dog person or cat person? Considering I have an 85-pound pit bull rescue that’s taken over my home since I got him last year…I’d have to say dog person. Although I do love the big cats. I’d happily have a pet tiger or mountain lion. A playmate for my dog. Legally and morally, though…there might be some issues with doing that, so I’ll refrain.
Romance and its overused sub-genres + Giveaway
One night, late at night, I was Tweeting and noticed a conversation going on with some of the Tweeters I follow about overused romance sub-genres. I thought that was an interesting word choice used to describe a sub-genre that was over published. After a few more Tweets I realized they were talking about a specific sub-genre and what has been ‘lumped’ into it. As the Tweeting went on it was clear they were talking about the paranormal sub-genre and that it was used too often to describe books, that in the ‘Tweeters‘ estimation should not even have been included in the paranormal sub-genre. So in fact, it was not that the category was over published, but that the books categorized as paranormal were not paranormal at all.
That shed a whole different light on this topic and of course, had me thinking, what a great topic for a post! Lucky for you ladies I stay up late at night Tweeting!
So, lets take a look. Books with characters such as vampires, shapeshifters, demon slayers and so forth easily fall into the paranormal sub-genre. But, what about Christine Feehan’s Ghosthunter series, including MIND GAME and so on . . . . our heroes in those stories were enhanced physically for their military exploits . . they were not vampires, or blood-sucking creatures of any kind for that matter, so would paranormal romance be the right category for them?
Or what about Virginia Kantra’s Selkie romances, do they technically count as paranormal?
Or Jamie Rush wrote a dystopian type of series, that should be its own category, or no?
Has the industry lumped too much into this sub-genre that may have turned readers away? Do we even pay attention to how things are categorized or what sub-genre they are in? If a book with a futuristic slant is categorized as paranormal and you primarily read futuristic stories, would being categorized as paranormal turn you away? Do you care that we excessively use the paranormal genre to describe everything . . . . different?
Interesting topic, something I had not really thought much about, although it made me wonder if some wonderful stories have been mis-represented turning away potential readers – Love to hear your thoughts.
But the most important question is did you see HUNGER GAMES and did you like it? Is it all the buzz?
Remember, every week 5 winners are randomly chosen for a free book – winners announced on Sunday – Good luck!

If you’ve enjoyed Suzanne Brockmann’s Troubleshooters series, you know that her books deliver on both the romantic and suspenseful fronts. Now with her latest, Born to Darkness, Brockmann makes her first entry into the paranormal genre with quite a bang. We think this quote from Booklist says it best:
“Brockmann’s thrill ride of a series-launcher is complex, involving a highly addictive longevity drug (which stimulates the part of the brain that produces superpowers), human trafficking, torture, a mysterious institute, a kick-ass heroine, a bad-boy hero, hot sex, missing children, secret crushes, and so much more . . . . The H. P. Mallory Starter Kit: How to Dive into the Jolie Wilkins Paranormal Romance Series
H. P. Mallory, the author of Fire Burn and Couldron Bubble and the Dulcie O’Neil series, was a self-published, bestselling sensation in eBook before signing a book deal with Random House for the next three books in the Jolie Wilkins series. On sale today is Witchful Thinking, the latest in this sexy, funny series about a self-deprecating psychic named Jolie whose life is forever changed when handsome warlock Rand walks into her life and insists that she’s a witch. It turns out quickly enough that Jolie also has a unique ability to reanimate the dead, but really, it’s not until she’s crowned Queen of the Underworld that Jolie’s life gets really complicated, and that’s where this novel picks up the tale.
The books are cute, light reading, full of what we love the most about the paranormal genre (love triangle with a warlock and a handsome vampire? Check!). Somehow they also manage to be very sexy and funny at the same time, which makes them a favorite for us here at Romance@Random. When we first heard about Witchful Thinking, we were dying to know why these self-published books were so popular, so we imagine you too may be wondering how you can dive into this series. We have a few options right here for you:
1. Start right with Witchful Thinking! Since the other titles are only available in eBook, the book has has quite a bit of backstory to catch everyone up to speed. This may also be good for those who have read them but need help remembering all the events thus far. (H. P. promises this is going to be the only book with all the backstory for new readers, so seasoned veterans can rest assured that the plot will move right along in the next two Jolie books coming later this year).
2. Meet Jolie Wilkins via her adorable YouTube videos, dishing advice to new witches everywhere! Our favorite is Lesson #3: Men of the Underworld, but you should also check out Lesson #1: Witch Problems and Lesson #2: Bonding.
3. Whether you’ve read these before or not, it’s worth diving into Be Witched, the $0.99 eBook short story from Rand’s perspective. For us fanatics, it’s more Rand, which is never a bad thing. Yum. For you newbies, it’ll give a nice taste of what Mallory’s world is all about.
SEE HOW THEY RUN + Giveaway!
SEE HOW THEY RUN and the Owl in the Attic (Bethany Campbell)
For me, stories evolve in different ways. Sometimes one arrives complete, as if the Muse special-ordered it, monogrammed and gift-wrapped. Other stories start with one idea that just won’t go away. The trouble is, it won’t go anywhere else either. It may just hang around and hang around, inhabiting the head like a reclusive owl brooding in the attic rafters.
The basis for SEE HOW THEY RUN crouched in the rafters a long, long time. The idea came from a piece written by neurologist Oliver Sacks. He described adult twins diagnosed as possibly autistic and institutionalized since childhood. Although they could not grasp much of what most of us call reality, they had two unusual gifts: astonishing powers of personal recollection and a genius with numbers.
I couldn’t get the story out of my mind. What fascinated me was their twinship. Maybe nobody else could grasp the world as they saw it, but they understood each other perfectly. This paired aloneness made them seem both cursed and charmed, almost mystical creatures.
A few years later I read an unrelated book, THE UNDERGROUND EMPIRE, a chilling description of international drug trafficking and its power to insinuate its influence almost any place it wished. It described a world of incredible corruption and violence. This was scary stuff with scary people–so scary, it made the owl’s eyes open wide as saucers.
I suddenly imagined Sacks’s institutionalized twins as boys of eight. One day on the playground, they see the driveby shooting of an elderly man. With them is the heroine, their teacher, Laura Stoner, who calls the police because the boys have noticed important details that may help identify the killers.
But when the police discover the victim is a Mafioso kingpin and drug lord, they know the boys will be in danger, for they can identify the men making the first strike in a long-simmering drug war between the Mafia and a South American cartel. They order Laura and the twins put into protective custody.
The hero, assistant district attorney and former detective, Mick Montana, is one of the guards assigned to conduct her and the twins to a safe house. They’re ambushed, however, making it clear the cartel has informants inside the drug task force. Laura and Mick can no longer trust the system to protect them and the boys. They must go on the run with no backup and no plan.
The boys are difficult, enigmatic, yet as vulnerable and defenseless as children can be. The killers in pursuit are predators, ruthless, expert, and with almost unlimited resources. To get the twins to safety will take all Mick’s smarts and daring. But just as much depends on Laura’s unwavering devotion to two puzzling boys unloved by anyone else in the world.
When I finished the book, I missed working on it, but that was okay. There was another owl up in the attic by then, sulking, solitary, and waiting. Do you like suspense books? What intrigues you most about suspense stories? Comment below, 5 winners are randomly chosen to win random books every week, winners announced on Sunday – good luck!
