That time of year, by Donna Kauffman + Giveaway!!!
Ah…the holiday season. That time of year when we think of friends, of family, reflect on the year that has past, our hopes of the future…and, you know, wonder if this is the year you’ll finally find out what those hunky Scotsman really wear under their kilts.
What? You have your annual traditions…I have mine!
Having set many books on the bonny shores of my Henderson ancestors’ homeland, Scotland is dear to my heart. And not just because of the Kilt Question…though it certainly adds to the charm! I have visited in the vibrant green of spring, and the dark and windy winter. And loved every single second of it.
My favorite spot is the Isle of Skye, which is like home to me. When I cross the bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh, I feel that I’ve crossed the Sound and stared at the craggy peaks of the Black Cuillins many, many times before.
Skye is sentimental to me in many ways…but this holiday season, it’s especially true, as I get to celebrate the digital release of my very first contemporary single title, THE LEGEND MACKINNON. 3 grand love stories wrapped up in one sweeping tale, delving into Skye’s beauty and it’s ancient mysteries. There are underground castles, Druid doors…and did I mention 3 hunky Scots heroes who aren’t exactly your run of the mill men?
The MacKinnon lads have had an interesting time of it…which, given one is a ghost, one a time traveler, and the last an immortal, is probably understating things a bit.
This book was also my first foray in writing paranormals. Most Scots based romance is historical, so this was an exciting chance for me, a contemporary author, to blend the two together. I loved the freedom, the adventure, the thrill of it. So much so, I wrote four more paranormals for Bantam in the following few years. (And, yes! They are all available in both print and digital download.) I revisited the UK with the second book, LEGEND OF THE SORCERER…Wales this time. (Both in our century…and the 23rd!) I came back again with my fifth and last paranormal…THE CHARM STONE, this time set on a Hebridean Island off the western Highland coast…not too far from Skye.
With more than 50 titles out there now, the books I’ve set in Scotland have been amongst those my readers claim are their all time favorites. THE LEGEND MACKINNON easily sits at the top of that list. I get letters from readers who say they’ve worn out their copy from re-reading it. (The best thing you can say to an author!) Now, with the digital release, you can read and re-read to your heart’s content.
Do you have a favorite comfort read? The one you go back to time and again?
And…have you ever wondered what those hunky Scots lads wear under their plaids? Give LEGEND MACKINNON a try and find out how the MacKinnon lads deal with that drafty issue.
Happy Holidays! Remember, 5 winners are chosen to win a random free book every week — winners announced on Sunday – good luck!
***Ladies, in my opinion, this series more than rocks! Retailers carrying this series found here – Also, Ebook versions of Donna’s old Loveswepts will be available Fall 2012 so put them on your To Buy Lists, you will love her stories!! Happy Romance, SueG***

Sounds like the kind of books my wife likes…
Comfort read Sandra Brown’s Tempest In Eden.
Donna I haven’t read The Charm Stone. I will look for it and your MacKinnons!
Monica McCarty and her highland historicals re-ignited my love of reading a couple years ago. Although it’s quite rare for me to go back and reread a book, I would have to say that highland historicals in general are a comfort read for me.
Hi Chris ~ I haven’t tried Monica McCarty. Thanks for the recommend!! I will have to look her up. You can never have too many highland historicals.
I agree, you can never have enough. I am always on the look out for another great book and look forward to reading more about your MacKinnons. Happy Holidays.
Chris – I’m like you — that time period is just fun reading for me and comforting for whatever reason — I mean, to think there’s no toothpaste as we know it, deodorant and so forth how is that comforting? love my highlanders! Try Maya Banks new series too – NEVER LOVE A HIGHLANDER was the last in her trilogy.
Thanks Sue. I’ve read and liked her KGI series. I’ll definitley have to check out her highlanders.
This sounds wonderful!!!! I love paranormal romance!!!!
I love to read so much. I have about 100 books on my keeper shelf. I have so many go to authors: Monica Mcarty, Vicky Drieling, Beverly Kendall, Julia Quinn, and Lisa Kleypas.
there are so many books in my TBR, I don’t often do re-reads. I have a huge stack of “keepers” but not enough time to read everything!!
I love all things Scottish! I got hooked with The Outlander series and continue my love affair as often as I can. Thank you Karen Marie Moning, Susanna Kearsley, Melissa Mayhue, etc for contributing to my obsession.
I really want this book
We went to Scotland a few years ago and my friend made a comment to a Scot about what was under the kilt and he mooned her! Too funny! So, now we know! My comfort read is any romance with humor. It always makes me feel better. : )
OMG – too funny is right! What a surprise for you
Hi Deborah – Nothing like the direct approach! But those Scots lads will give just as direct an answer. I love it!!
I love to revisit Christine Feehan’s Carpathian books, doesn’t matter which one!
Yes, enjoyable series – Christine’s books are the best.
Comfort reads and my all-time favorites: Joe’s Wife and Sweet Annie by Cheryl St. John, Devil In Winter by Lisa Kleypas, The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn, Beauty and the Baron by Deborah Hale, and Yours Until Dawn by Teresa Mederios. I also love books set in Scotland, I think due to having a bit of Scottish ancestry. The Maya Banks series is on my Wish List and now I’m excited to add Donna Kauffman’s books! I think I’ll start with The Legend MacKinnon.
Yea!! Can’t wait to hear what you think – thanks Lori!
Hi Lori ~ I hope you enjoy them! Teresa Medeiros is one of my all time favorite authors. Love her!
I have quite a few comfort reads. I love to re-read anything by Laurell K Hamilton-especially Blue Moon and Incubus Dreams, I also love Sabrina Jeffries-Hellions of Halstead Hall, and Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost.
I have always wondered what the men wore under their kilts. I hope nothing, more fun that way. I would love to win and read this book, so please choose me. Thanks for the chance to win.
Wow — that is one author I’ve not read – LKH — Love Sabrina’s stories – thanks Chris
For my comfort reads I have Julie Garwood and Linda Howard.
And yes I always have wondered what they wear under their plaids.
I don’t have a comfort book as of yet. There are just too many books that I want to read right now! And I love reading about the Scots Men! I now have another set of books to look into! Thank you!
anything by Lisa Kleypas,Mary Mary Balogh,or Catherine Anderson.Merry Christmas Sue
Happy Holidays everyone:)
I like Lisa Kleypas’s Travis series and Judith McNaught for comfort reads.
Ah, Judith McNaught! One of my first “keeper” authors!
I love the Wallflower series from Lisa Kleypas, Highland Guard series by Monica McCarty and the A-Team from Pamela Clare. I have read all several times. I’ve just discovered Maya Banks Highland brothers and fallen for them.
Dolores F.
I really don’t have comfort reads. There’s just so many new books that I want to read. And Sottish medievals are my favorite. I bet the Scots of old never wore anything under that kilt lol.
Hello everyone! Thanks for the great comments. I love seeing what authors are your comfort reads (and re-reads!) I don’t often go back and re-read, but one of my all time favorite sentimental reads is The Windflower by Tom & Sharon Curtis. Was one of the first I ever read and I love going back to it from time to time.
Another favorite is Lucky’s Lady, an early single title by Tami Hoag, from her romance/Loveswept days. Who can resist that Cajun accent, cher? Not me!
I religiously go back to The Host by Stephenie Meyer.
And I would imagine Scots-men wear absolutely nothing under their kilts.. At least I can always hope..
Yes, always have wondered what’s under there (besides the obvious!). There’s so many new books coming out all the time and my list keeps growing as I discover other authors, that I don’t go back to reread books too often. Probably have reread the JD Robb books most. Would love to go back and reread All the Cynster books by Stephanie Laurens – loved them all.
All of Julie Garwood’s historicals are my comfort reads, especially “Saving Grace” and “The Lion’s Lady.”
Sounds like the kind of book I like! LOL I have a list of books that I go back to time and again. Different ones for different moods, situations. If I need something that is short, something funny, something historical, contemporary, erotica, etc. Long list.
Diana Gaboldon’s OUTLANDER Series

My favorite comfort read has always been Constance O’Banyon’s book Rebel Temptress but I haven’t read it in a while must get it out and read it again. Love storise set during the Civil War
Kilts..that sums it up. My love for anything Scottish. And I have Karen Marie Moning to blame. Kiss of the Highlander was the first romance book I had read in years and it rekindled my addiction!
Comfort read: Leaves of Grass by Whitman. I read it every couple of years.
Ho, Ho, Ho…

I don’t really have a favorite comfort read. There are so many books I haven’t read yet, I just pick whatever I’m in the mood for and enjoy. I love Scottish romance, those kilts are so sexy, especially given that those Scots lads don’t wear anything under them.
So many comfort reads – currently rereading Linda Howard’s Mackenzie books.
Isle of Skye sounds like a magical place! Haha, mainly cause it’s sounds like an isolated island with a very dreamy landscape.
I don’t really have a comfort read cause I’m a mood-reader. Haha, and currently, I’m into adult fiction romance.:D
Thanks for the giveaway, and happy holidays!
It is a magical place – stunning landscapes and a broad range of geography, from towering sheer cliffs over-loaoking the ocean and sound, to dark, craggy mountains, to small inlets where the seal pups come in to play. It is everything it sounds like and more! Not that I’m biased or anything. ::))
Have a wonderful holiday!
Especially this time of year when I’m looking for that special book to sit back and relax in front of a blazing fireplace I pick up one of my old favorites by Mary Balough to help me forget the cold winds and snow fluries outside.
On the other hand when I want a little excitment and adventure I love to pick up one of your books and be taken away to a different time and place. With a ghost, a time traveler, and an immortal it sounds like reading The Legend MacKinnon is the perfect way to start of the New Year!
Jeanne ~ If you give my MacKinnon men a try, I hope they keep you warm and entertained over the holidays.
Wait…that didn’t exactly sound right.
But hey, wouldn’t we all like to be entertained by a gorgeous man in a kilt this holiday season!
)
Happy reading, and happy holidays!
Donna -
Since my ancestors were from Inverness I love men in kilts! Unfortunately my Italian husband wouldn’t let me buy him one when we visited Scotland.
I LOVE all of your books!!! Not sure if I have read this one or not.
I have found all books are my comfort read, when I am down I can pick up a book and it will take me to a happy place. I love Jennifer Ashley series, and Karen Hawkins they really can write about Scotland. But I can read anyone`s book about the Highlands or Scotland in general !
I’ve read alllllllllll 5 books in the Paranormal category that Donna wrote — some even ebooks! — and loved them all. My comfort reads vary — at this time of year, I have my favorite holiday books/stories. Other times, I grab a paperback I have saved and read it again and again. One of my comfort reads from Donna is “Some Like It Scot”. It is the best, IMHO.
I’ve read all the Glass Slipper books and have LOVED them. Looking forward to reading this series, but I can never find any of those books online
Hi Debbie – All of the books I’ve written, with the exception of the Loveswepts I wrote, are available in print and digital format. And the Loveswepts will all be available digitally next fall!! All 14 of them!!
This series looks delectable, unique and special. Just love it. Congratulations and best wishes. A comfort read is a book that transports me to another space, time, realm and is memorable.
Sounds wonderful! I love men in kilts and I know if you wear something under it, it’s called a skirt.
If it is Scotish or Irish I love it.. and if it is written by Donna Kauffman even better..
One of my comfort reads is Skye O’Mally by Beatrice Small… She is my ultimate Heroine…
I work in a library and am often bringing home books to read, so I don’t re-read too much. I do go back to Sandra Brown’s older romance novels when I want a cozy read. That or any harlequin romance novel (or cheesy romance novels which is what I call them
)! I love them!
My favorite comfort read is Nora Roberts Angels
Fall. I think Scottish lads wear undergarments under they’re skirts because they don’t want their butts to show!
Love to read the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn, Georgette Heyer, and Janet Chapman as far as historicals go. I have most ofDonna’s books but not these. Look forward to reading them- hoping for Nook gift cards from Santa.
