What makes a Romance hero desirable?? + Giveaway!

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, usually buff, lots of hair, sexy eyes and in general, the image of a bad boy. So, seriously – what makes these bad boys desirable?

Our heroes employment seems to vary dramatically – some are firefighters, policemen, vampires (is that a job?), CEO’s, Sheik’s and more!

But we love them, fangs & all!

So what makes these men a notch above the rest?

  • Alpha heroes are key
  • Caring is an important aspect in their personality too
  • They love us as we are, its a mutual thing *wink*
  • They are willing to fight to the end – for family and country
  • They are men that are comfortable being men, sometimes maybe too much so *wink*

  • What else, what makes a hero – that, ‘to die for hero’, that you want to read over and over again — what is that one desirable characteristic you cannot help but fall for?

5 winners are chosen every week and announced on Sunday to win a random FREE book – good luck!

    1. MonicaR says:

He has to make me laugh, of course! ; )

    2. DebraG says:

      Consideration and protectiveness

    3. The hero strives to be all that they can be.

    4. Julie McCann says:

Sense of humor, and little kids, especially girls, can wrap them round their tiny fingers.

    5. Felicia M. Ciaudelli says:

High intelligence – to make up for my massive deficiency in that department – LOL – definitely a good sense of humor, too -

    6. Linda says:

Knowledge and capability combined with Alpha tendencies and i´m a puddle on the floor =)

    7. Rebecca C. says:

      Quick witted intelligence. :)

    8. Julie says:

Above all, he needs to be human (vampires, excepted, of course), to be flawed in the way humans are and to be able to admit to and overcome those flaws. The hero in my soon-to-be-released book is sometimes his own worst enemy, but love prevails in the end.

    9. Tamara Hoffa says:

I agree with Julie, I love a flawed hero. Also a lack of conceit, not confidence, but conceit

    10. Diane D - Florida says:

The one thing that I like to see in a Hero is for him to be a bit of a rogue, with a hint of danger and charm. I also want him to be loyal, loving and gentle. Hmm, that’s more than one, sorry, I got a bit carried away.

      • Sue says:

I know rogues are popular . . . .great for romance reading, would not like that in real life, but that’s not what we’re talking about — yea, rogues work *G*

    11. lisa says:

Well, he can’t be perfect…what man is? lol strong and tough til you get him alone and then he’s a big teddy bear with a hug that makes you feel safe from everything!

    12. Diane D - Florida says:

The one thing that I like to see in a Hero is for him to be a bit of a rogue, with a hint of danger and charm. I also want him to be loyal, loving, protective and gentle. Hmm, that’s more than one, sorry, I got a bit carried away.

    13. Tina B says:

Hmm…you’ve mentioned the most important, I think for me. Loyalty, Alpha (of course), and above all else, passion! Whether it be with their women, jobs or in everyday life, that for me is the most important. I like a man who is passionate about something and will fight to the end for it. Thanks.

    14. Sue says:

Looks like we’re liking rogues .. . .yes? Our romance hero could be a rogue?

      • Diane D - Florida says:

Sorry, my comment didn’t go through the first time, so I added a word and clicked “submit” again. Now, it’s on twice. I apologize.

    15. Tina Rucci says:

There is no perfect man, but a hero should at least be able to tell the woman he loves her.

    16. Allison Motherway says:

I really like a “Dominant” male character. He has a take charge attitude in all aspects.

    17. Shelley B says:

I like a guy who starts off with not many redeeming qualities, but deep down, a guy worth having is waiting to get out. (Like Tom in Ride With Me)

    18. May P. says:

Someone who understands me, a bit of charm, a bit of sexiness….

    19. Betty Hamilton says:

      Vulnerability…. Apha, of course.

    20. Lisa H says:

Love your list!! But I would add sense of humor. Able to laugh at themselves. At the right moment of course! Besides that, hmmm…pretty good list! :-)

    21. Saly says:

The hero totally has to be alpha and not too alpha that he comes across as a jerk, caring is important. I enjoy protective heroes as well. And I have a thing for cowboys and some of them have been beta, I liked them because of the protective thing ;)

    22. Carol M says:

He should love you and want to do everything for you to make you happy!

    23. Karen W. says:

repectful, doesn’t treat a woman like she is a child, and doesn’t treat her like she is the maid, cook, and “bottle washer”.

    24. Jahaira says:

Definitely a sense of humor, sometimes they are the ones you love to hate. When they are the anti hero turned hero in the end.

    25. Wilma Frana says:

He has to care for people and protect the ones he loves.

    26. Gail Nichols says:

I like the heroes that fight for their woman’s love and respect like there is nothing else they want.

    27. Rain Maiden Jen says:

I love a smart man. There are not many books out there that I’ve read with smart sexy guys, but there should be.

    28. Lynne Hankins says:

Sense of humor! and great with kids

      fingershankins@yahoo.com

    29. Elizabeth E. says:

There are so many things that are important! Humor yes, but a willingness to accept the heroine for her eccentricities at the end of the day. I also like a hero who is for the most part comfortable in his own skin but has a kernel of vulnerability in him that only the heroine can be trusted with.

    30. Tonya says:

Humor. Likes kids & animals. Loves his woman for who she is and doesn’t want her to change. Fights for what he believes in–even though it might not always be the right thing by society’s standards.

    31. Shy Amy says:

I’m a complete sucker for a soft heart hidden beneath a gruff exterior. That teddy bear thing gets me every time. A strong sense of honor, or even his own personal code that he sticks to like its law. *sigh* Melts me.

    32. Erin S says:

He compliments her and brings out her better qualities and vice versa

    33. Quilt Lady says:

Make him a cowboy. That makes him a hot hero.

    34. Patti P says:

I would say loyalty, protective, passionate, and can take charge and keep his calm when facing trouble and chaos. He also should be able to make me laugh, blush and go weak in the knees. Since I am making a list..umm super sexy hot and be able to read my moods whether I want to just have him snuggle up with me or seduce me into doing crazy pleasurable things..wink

    35. Bet L says:

He must recognize his own flaws and not judge or criticize his heroine’s flaws. Except for that oh so sexy scars of his in interesting places….

    36. Teri C says:

I like my heroes with a little snark and darness.

    37. Lori Weller says:

a sense of humor with protective of woman and children

    38. Dolores Fuentes says:

not perfect, sense of humor, brave, not afraid of anything unless it concerns having to change a diaper or take care of a little one! :)

    39. erinf1 says:

Whenever I think of the perfect “hero” I always think of Nathan Fiklion’s character, Mal, in Firefly/Serenity. Tough, sensitive, loyal and very smart alec. Let me take a moment and… aaaahhh… Nathan Fillion ;)

    40. Janiec says:

Yes, a sense of humor is a must. You must also be able to trust him and know that he stands by you.

    41. Susan T. says:

Love that they are all hard on the outside but a big teddybear on the inside. Must have sense of humor.

    42. Barbara Elness says:

Someone with that protective impulse, even though the heroine might think she can take care of herself, he still wants to make sure she’s safe and cared for.

    43. Diane says:

An alpha of course; someone considerate, loving and understanding; someone who is there for you when needed; who takes care of you and protects you.

    44. Thanks for your question, Sue. To me, an ideal romance hero is truly heroic.

He’s strong on the inside, and sometimes on the outside. He’s smart; for me the sexiest part of a man is his brain. He can think outside the box, and often must.

He’s idealistic and altruistic; his accomplishments benefit many others. He’s not self-centered; everyone has an ego, but selfishness is a big turnoff.

And he can overcome tremendous obstacles and endure great dangers, losses, and sorrows for the sake of love. His love for the heroine is his main motive. It drives the plot, along with her love for him.

Such a man must be able to give love and worthy to receive it. Which is why unlike most readers I don’t care for alpha males. I don’t see how cynical, arrogant control freaks can love anyone. I can’t identify with heroines who fall for men like that.

My kind of hero might need the right woman to make his life complete, but not to redeem him. Just my opinion, but in fiction as well as fact, redemption is strictly a do-it-yourself job.

I don’t have any requirements regarding looks. Shucks, I’d go for the Elephant Man if he really loved me!

We readers don’t have much choice as to our hero’s station in life. Except in romantic suspense, almost all heroes are at the top of the social ladder.

But I’d sure dig more heroes who are men of modest means. Tremendous wealth and power make a man less sexy, at least to me. What’s more, a hero who must work for a living and worry about money presents more interesting plot possibilities.

      Keep up the good work!

    45. bn100 says:

I’d like to add charming and funny

    46. MaryC says:

A sense of humor, knowing when to step back and let the heroine handle the situation and of course having her back.

    47. Kim h says:

Laughter, heart, ,kindness, a good listener, hot pics, whoo

    48. FaniP says:

Humor most of all, especially if it’s on the dry, sarcastic and self-directed side:) I love a man who can laugh at himself instead of only teasing others.

    49. Integrity. That to me means that he is strong in his life decisions, that he is a good man, that he can overcome. It is part honesty, faithfulness, dedication, compassion. I love a sense of humor..make me laugh you are mostly there. The ability to think of others. I love passion, be it through artistic means, intellectual conversations, and in the magnetism that speaks volumes.

    50. Give me a bad boy, like Damon Salvatore!

    51. Give me a bad boy, like Damon Salvatore.

Hope this doesn’t come thru twice!!!!

    52. Annie says:

Has to be a reformed bad boy . The kind who been there done that ,but wants to be better. &Who can laugh at himself.

    53. Shannon says:

Loyalty. I want to know the hero will be there. But humor is important too!
