#Wild Wednesday Snippet – Molly O’Keefe author of soon to be released Wild Child
In this week’s snippet – the last one!!! I am introducing one of my favorite characters in the book, Reba. Reba the Hairless Chinese Crested dog.
“Hold your horses,” she muttered, then went into the bathroom with the carrier. Carefully setting it down on the floor, she unzipped the side and waited for what had to be the most ridiculous-looking dog to ever walk the earth to come barreling out. But there was only a whim- per from inside the carrier.
She’s spoiled, Jenna had said. Temperamental and demanding. You two are made for each other.
Monica rolled her eyes and got down on her knees. In the shadows of the carrier the dog cowered, pink rib- bons quivering, rhinestone collar glittering in the bath- room light.
“Come here, dog.” The dog didn’t budge.
Monica sighed and prayed for strength. Jenna had asked her to take this dog as though she’d been asking Monica to take her child and Monica, already depleted, already worn raw by Jenna’s illness and all the hospital bills, had agreed. She’d agreed as if she couldn’t wait to
care for another creature. As if the company of a hair- less Chinese Crested dog was what her solitary life was missing.
“I live in hotels. I don’t like dogs. Jenna was desper- ate, or she never would have picked me,” she told Reba, bracing her elbows on the white tiles of the bathroom. Reba crept closer, the white fur on her paws and ears shaking as she inched her way into the light. She blinked into the wilderness of the bathroom, looking past Mon- ica as if searching for Jenna.
“I miss her too,” she whispered, bracing her face in her hands. She blinked away the bite of tears; the days of grief were over. She had work to do, a book to write, and Jenna’s medical bills to pay off.
Monica reached out to touch the pink ribbon nestled in the wild hair around Reba’s head. That hair grew nowhere else on her skinny, spotted body. “You don’t even know how ridiculous you are,” she whispered.
As if affronted, Reba growled and snapped at her. Monica stood, grabbed Reba under her tiny smooth belly (which was weird and intimate and kind of made Monica’s skin crawl), and lifted her up to look into her little brown eyes, nearly buried behind the white fur.
“I don’t know what to do with you.”
Reba squirmed and Monica set her down. Delicately shaking out her legs, the dog ran across the bathroom into the dark bedroom. With one smooth leap she was on the bed, turning circles before curling up on the pil- low closest to the window.
Monica hung her head, wondering how much more bizarre her life was going to get on this awful trip down memory lane in Bishop, Arkansas.
“That’s my side of the bed,” she told the dog, who didn’t care.
About the Book:
Perfect for readers of Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Rachel Gibson, this sizzling romance tells the story of a sexy small-town mayor and a notorious “bad girl,” who discover that home really is where the heart is.
Monica Appleby is a woman with a reputation. Once she was America’s teenage “Wild Child,” with her own reality TV show. Now she’s a successful author coming home to Bishop, Arkansas, to pen the juicy follow-up to her tell-all autobiography. Problem is, the hottest man in town wants her gone. Mayor Jackson Davies is trying to convince a cookie giant to move its headquarters to his crumbling community, and Monica’s presence is just too . . . unwholesome for business. But the desire in his eyes sends a very different message: Stay, at least for a while.
Jackson needs this cookie deal to go through. His town is dying and this may be its last shot. Monica is a distraction proving too sweet, too inviting—and completely beyond his control. With every kiss he can taste her loneliness, her regrets, and her longing. Soon their uncontrollable attraction is causing all kinds of drama. But when two lost hearts take a surprise detour onto the bumpy road of unexpected love, it can only lead someplace wonderful.
